As part of a new campaign to #stopiracy, new information published by Italian football’s Lega Serie A has illustrated how widespread acts of criminal piracy have become in Italy.

Research suggests that in 2018 there were 578 million acts of piracy, resulting in an estimated €455 million loss to the Italian economy.

Using this reearch, Pointer Brand Protection, who work in the anti-counterfeiting industry, have produced an infographic with the main results

Robert Stolk, CEO of Pointer Brand Protection commented, “Our experience of working with clients in the Sports industry is that counterfeiting, piracy, and other acts which infringe the intellectual property of leagues, clubs, and brands, are all being taken more seriously by those affected and by authorities. Fighting online counterfeiting is essential to protect not just business interests, but also consumer welfare. Acts of piracy are part of a black market economy that fuels organized crime and undermines the very organizations that fans want to support and this new information is a timely reminder that the seriousness of the problem has grown and that brands must take action if they want to have an impact on these issues.”
