Movistar, Orange target Vodafone subs

Spain’s Movistar (Telefónica) and Orange will soon find themselves locked in a battle for Vodafone customers who will no longer be offered football from the 2019-20 season onwards.

El Economista reports that both Movistar and Orange have done their sums as to how much it will cost to secure each customer. It adds that while their conclusions are confidential, it is possible to deduce some hypothetical figures.

Assuming 300,000 Vodafone TV football subscribers decide to find another provider and choose equally (150,000 each) between Movistar and Orange, the former would have to find an extra €215 million and latter €80 million each year. The additional annual costs covering each new subscriber would work out at around €1,400 for Movistar and €533 for Orange.

However, ARPU from their most expensive packages currently amounts to around €125 for Movistar and €80 for Orange. This would see Movistar earn around €6 a month and Orange €35 a month from each former Vodafone customer.

The figures will be even more favourable for the two companies should they manage to secure some Vodafone customers for the upcoming season, which starts later this month in Spain and will be the last in which Vodafone shows football.
